Silk Making...

On the way to see the floating village, we stopped to see silk being made from the lotus plant.

 The lotus flower is the symbol of Devine purity in many Asian cultures. In Buddhism the lotus is known to be associated with purity, spiritual awakening, and faithfulness. 


There is a seed in the fruit that is very sweet to eat.


There is no waste in a lotus plant. All parts which do not enter into the fabric process are edible and offer unique properties. 


The spinning stage consists of transforming the lotus fiber into a thread.

 After cleaning, spinners carefully cut around the stems and pull their extremeties to extract the lotus fibers. Twelve layers of fiber must be superimposed and rolled with precision to produce a high quality thread. 

 The most meticulous part of the process is putting the different pieces of thread together without visible junction or weakness. The thread has to be very regular or it will break during the weaving process and decrease the quality of the fabric. 

 One spinner produces 750 feet of thread per day. To produce one jacket, 4 yards of fabric or 12,000 yards of fiber which means two months of work for a spinner. Because of it’s complexity, this process must be done completely by hand.

We couldn’t help ourselves to visit some friends from last year in Chiang Mai

This is actually quite fun for us. When we we’re here last year we made several friends (the staff) at the Hard Rock Cafe. All the ones from last year who are still there, recognized us immediately. It kind of got to the point that they all treated us like we we’re the only people there. Even the manager came to our table (because of the ruckus) to greet us and welcome us back. This is Eak (Eric to us) Tua told us that he was a queen for his Halloween costume while working on that day. He said it was very easy for him 😜 The hostess, Lomchoy was the first to greet us when we arrived. Mam, the only one who wasn’t there last year, instantly made friends wit us. If you’ve been to Hard Rock Cafe, you might recognize that they wear a number of pins on their uniforms - kind of like achievement pins. Well... a couple of the staff gave us a few of their personal pins while we were there. 😃😃😃

Arrival in Tokyo

We arrived at the Park Hotel in the Ginza District of Tokyo. After more than 12 hours in the air from Dallas/Ft Worth and another hour on the road from Narita airport to the hotel, we put our feet up for a few minutes before heading out for some dinner and libation. From our small yet comfortable 29th floor room, we enjoyed a wonderful south facing city view. We chose this hotel for a reason.
